When the Cricket Sings offers a nocturnal glimpse of Shanghai street life, depicting one of the typical neighbourhoods disappearing under the city’s rapid urban development. The improvised sound track is a duet for the ancient Chinese instrument the Gu Zheng and for the cricket, a creature revered in Chinese culture for its strength, fertility and song. Crickets sing only at night.
